The records of the American Colonization Society

Organization founded in 1817 devoted to helping freed slaves emigrate from the United States to Africa. The Society was instrumental in establishing the colony of Liberia. The Records consist of letterbooks, account books, minutes of proceedings, reports, financial records, and letters received. Correspondence, financial and business papers, reports, and miscellaneous material, chiefly 18231912, relate to administrative and financial matters, membership, problems of slavery and the status of slaves in the pre-Civil War period, emigration, colonization, and education in Liberia.
