LAMP has now microfilmed the Mexican newspaper El Diario de Juárez for the period January 2008 – December 2010 on 78 reels of microfilm, which may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan by members of LAMP and CRL. This daily newspaper is published in Juárez, a large urban border city in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, near El Paso, Texas. 2008 began an extraordinary period of extreme violence relating to drug-trafficking and government actions that included the deployment of the Mexican military and Federal police into the city. During this period, Juárez experienced some of the highest murder rates in the world. This microfilming project preserves the publication’s full content--including advertisements and condolencias (personal notices on deaths of city residents--that do not appear in digital databases.
LAMP's project to preserve this title used primarily the holdings at New Mexico State University, although additional gap-filling issues were provided by the Universidad Autónoma at Ciudad Juárez (UACJ). Molly Molloy, the Border & Latin American Studies Librarian at NMSU proposed the project and worked with the UACJ to include their issues. The University of Texas at Austin has agreed to archive NMSU's hard copy issues.
