The Slavic and East European Microform Project) (SEEMP) has preserved issues from 1992 to 2007 of the newspaper Oslobođenje.
Oslobođenje has been published in Sarajevo since 1943 when it began as the official newspaper of Marshal Tito’s Partisans. During the war in Bosnia in the 1990s and the siege of Sarajevo, Oslobođenje was the only newspaper to continue publishing, and it missed only one issue during that time. It has long maintained its stance of supporting a multiethnic Bosnian society.
Most of the issues were provided for microfilming by the University of Michigan and the Library of Congress. Harvard University provided issues of some of the related titles.
SEEMP was not able to locate issues to microfilm for the years 1992–95 and 2005 from within its membership, so it looked to other avenues for acquiring these years. Issues of Oslobođenje from the war years in particular are valuable sources for researchers, so SEEMP had these additional years microfilmed from holdings in Sarajevo.
While the main goal of the project was to preserve the Sarajevo edition of Oslobođenje, SEEMP institutions found holdings of other editions of the paper from this time period in their collections and contributed these small sets of related titles for microfilming as well.
SEEMP approved the multi-year allocation of funding for this project in Spring 2008, and the microfilming and acquisition of Oslobođenje has been in process since then. This project is now complete.
