African Newspapers is the second collection module of the World Newspaper Archive, produced by CRL in partnership with Readex, a division of NewsBank. This collection provides access to more than 40 fully searchable African newspaper titles, published between 1800 and 1922. African Newspapers features titles from Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Languages include English, German, French, Portuguese, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Sotho, and others.
Titles were recommended by WNA Charter Participants, faculty members, and subject experts from the Cooperative Africana Materials Project (CAMP). The final material was selected for its breadth of coverage, diversity of viewpoints, and historical significance.

- East African Standard, Mombasa Times and Uganda Argus (Kenya)
- Leselinyana la Lesutho (Lesotho)
- O Africano (Mozambique)
- Lagos Standard (Nigeria)
- Cape Town Gazette and African Advertiser (South Africa)
- Ilanga Lase Natal (South Africa)
- Buluwayo Chronicle (Zimbabwe)

The titles are cross-searchable with other modules of the World Newspaper Archive, as well as with other Readex products such as America’s Historical Newspapers.
Access and Pricing
African Newspapers is currently accessible to Charter Participants and subscribing members. To access the collection, please visit your library’s homepage for Readex products and click on World Newspaper Archive, or visit the page directly.
CRL member access
For CRL libraries who elect to invest in the ongoing digitization of resources, CRL charges a one-time payment for purchase, plus minimal annual maintenance fees. The purchase fee is scaled to each participant’s library materials expenditures. Payment schedules are designed to minimize the impact on library acquisition budgets. CRL and its partners provide long-term access to a rich and diverse set of international scholarly resources. CRL continues to maintain microfilm copies of all WNA papers as well, and makes them available to its community as a regular benefit of CRL membership.
