Sir William Clarke was one of the chief secretaries to the Generals of the Parliamentary and Cromwellian army from the end of the Civil War to the Restoration. Clarke's papers concern the British Civil War and the Army and military proceedings, particularly in Scotland. This collection of manuscripts represents one of the most significant sources for the study of the Civil War period outside the State Papers.
