The Center for Research Libraries and East View Information Services are pleased to announce Phase 2 of the Global Press Archive CRL Alliance, a successful academic-commercial partnership which makes available a substantial collection of digitized international newspapers. The GPA CRL Alliance, launched in 2019, brought together CRL members and other supporting institutions to champion a new model grounded in the principles of openness, equity, and transparency to expand digital access to news resources — 4.5 million pages by mid-2022, and featuring hundreds of newspapers from China, the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, Russia, and more.
Building on this groundbreaking partnership, Phase 2 highlights the same commitment to open-access and contemporary content, supporting new research in areas previously bounded and increasing diverse perspectives while providing the broadest accessibility to rare, vernacular-language newspaper content from around the world.
A two-year commitment, core components of Phase 2 will include delivery of up to 3 million pages of content, including 2 million pages as open-access content and 1 million pages of in-copyright content available to CRL members. Content for Phase 2 will be identified by CRL and contributing institutions and prioritized by an advisory group and multiple selection teams with vast subject expertise drawn from across CRL membership. All content will be presented in full-image and full-text format and hosted on East View's customized Global Press Archive platform.
For more information, details of the proposed Phase 2 offer, and cost models suggested by CRL, see Global Press Archive CRL Alliance Phase 2 in eDesiderata. (To leave comments on the offer, please make sure you are logged into the eDesiderata platform.)
