Event Logistics
The Center for Research Libraries, along with the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) and the Western European Studies Section (WESS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), is co-sponsoring an "International and Area Studies Workshop for Librarians" on Friday, June 26, 2015. The workshop is timed to coincide with the ALA Annual meeting in San Francisco.
The full-day workshop is designed to assist librarians who are newly responsible for Western European and Latin American humanities and social sciences collecting. It will cover publishing trends in Western Europe and Latin America, providing reference services, and tips for getting up to speed quickly as a librarian newly assigned to cover these world areas.
Rationale
Area and international studies librarians require a variety of skills, combining deep subject background with knowledge of library processes/workflows, an awareness of research trends, and digital developments in their respective fields. Increasingly, librarians are being asked to combine subject expertise or add new world areas to their workload. As discussed at recent events on the state of area studies in libraries (for example, in Durham, NC and Bloomington, IN), recruitment and continuing professional development of area studies information professionals is crucial for shaping collections and being partners in the research and teaching mission of our institutions.
This hands-on workshop will provide expert guidance for new—or newly-assigned—librarians in Latin American, Iberian, and Western European subject areas. It will also explore synergies among the areas of collecting and provide an opportunity to network with colleagues beyond our traditional area conferences.
