East View Information Services and the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) have launched Post-Perestroika Newspapers, the fourth in-copyright collection of titles digitized under the Global Press Archive(GPA) CRL Alliance and the first collection from Phase 2 of the program. Post-Perestroika joins three other in-copyright collections funded through the Alliance:
- El Caribe Digital Archive
- Middle Eastern and North African Newspapers Premium
- East African Newspapers
These collections are selected by a CRL advisory committee and available to CRL members as a benefit of membership.
Post-Perestroika Newspapers currently includes nearly 200,000 pages of newspapers, featuring the following titles:
- Chas pik (Час пик)
- Delovoi Mir (Деловой мир)
- Kuranty (Куранты)
- Moscow Times, The
- Nevskoe vremia (Невское время)
- Novye Izvestiia (Новые Известия)
- Obshchaia gazeta (Общая газета)
- Pravda - piat', 5 (daily,weekly) (Правда -пять, 5 (ежедневная, еженедельная))
- Pravda/Slovo (Правда/Слово)
- Rossia (Россия)
- Rossiiskie vesti (Российские вести)
- Sobesednik (Собеседник)
- Zhizn' (Жизнь)
With coverage from 1990 to 2016, this collection provides significant documentation of and perspective into the historical and political landscape that defined post-Soviet Russia.
MARC records will be available through CRL’s catalog, OCLC’s WorldCat database and as a Knowledge Base collection through Collection Manager.
Post-Perestroika Newspapers is the first collection in phase 2 of the Global Press Archive CRL Alliance, a multi-year, flagship collaboration between CRL and East View Information Services to deliver over 15 collections of up to 7 million pages of content, including 5 million pages available open access. In addition to the four in-copyright collections, six open-access collections are currently available under the auspices of the Alliance:
- Imperial Russian Newspapers
- Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers
- Late Qing and Republican-Era Chinese Newspapers
- Middle Eastern and North African Newspapers
- Southeast Asian Newspapers
- South Asian Newspapers
The GPA CRL Alliance is an initiative by East View Information Services and the Center for Research Libraries to develop a special series of thematically designed collections to meet the priorities of the CRL members. Fundraising for Phase 2 of the Global Press Archive CRL Alliance will remain open until the end of 2022 and represents a continuation of this successful commercial-academic partnership. Phase 2 highlights the same focus on open-access and contemporary content, supporting research in areas previously bounded and increasing diverse perspectives while providing the broadest accessibility to rare, vernacular newspaper content from around the world.
A two-year commitment, core components of Phase 2 include delivery of up to 3 million pages of content, including 2 million pages as open-access content and 1 million pages of in-copyright content available to CRL members.
